Things to see and do

With a big selection of walks straight from the door,

Tanhouse is a haven for ramblers of all abilities. A half-hour circuit of the farmers’ fields takes in some of the area’s best Protected Views and is suitable for the smallest of adventurers.  A slightly longer route takes you through rolling countryside and into the heart of Rye.  The most ambitious can make it all the way to Hastings on a spectacular cliff walk through Winchelsea Beach, Pett Level and Fairlight.

It's a popular area for cyclists too: the long flat route to Dungeness is particularly scenic.

Barely half an hour by car,

you will find no end of interesting things to do and see.  Bodiam Castle, Battle Abbey and Herstmonceaux Castle are perfect for history buffs and kids alike.  This is the heart of 1066 country.

Active types will find exhilaration nearby: kite-surfing at Camber, Canoeing on the River Rother, horse riding through the countryside, or even paragliding near Eastbourne, all of which can be booked in advance.

If you’re up for something more relaxing

there’s pottery-painting at Hawkhurst, wine tours,  two superb boutique cinemas, a number of high-end spas in Rye, and even Yoga on the beach.

The area is renowned for high quality produce.  Locally sourced meat like salt-marsh lamb and dry-aged beef, fresh fruit and vegetables from Kent – the Garden of England - and some of the finest seafood straight off the boat.

And if you’re down for the week, France is well within reach.  The Channel Tunnel is a 40 minute drive, which means you can be in France in no time.  Perfect for a food shop, or lunch in Le Touquet.  For extra special occasions, you can charter a plane from Lydd to Le Touquet, with a 15 minute flight time across the Channel.
